Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson is expected to make a number of changes to his starting lineup when his side takes on Southampton in their FA Cup fourth round clash on Saturday. Catch all the live FA Cup action from that game by signing up with us here on Live Sport Network.
The Red Devils are favorites to progress to the next round at the expense of Southampton and Ferguson is expected to give a run in for some of his younger players. Javier Hernandez, Gabriel Obertan and Fabio are all expected to start the game while Rio Ferdinand’s injury means that Jonathan Evans is likely to make his first start since United’s narrow win over Liverpool in the third round.
Ryan Giggs had scored the only goal of the match from the penalty spot in the second minute of the game and though Liverpool threatened an equalizer in spite of being reduced to 10 men, United hung on to claim a vital win over their arch rivals.
Southampton on the other hand enjoyed a fairly comfortable victory over Blackpool with Lee Barnard and Guilherme do Prado on target for the Saints. Southampton will be keen to end their losing streak against United with the Red Devils having won the last five meetings between the two sides including a 2-0 win in this competition two years ago.

FA Cup Match Southampton v Man Utd:
This will be short — and will serve more like a place holder for match related talk. Southampton will be interesting opposition as — correct me if I’m wrong — it’s the first time we meet them after relegating them to the Championship for the first time in their Premier League history.
It’s a four o’clock kick off, UK time, which is a few hours from now and I can’t really say much about our opposition. I could make the stock statement here, about this being their cup final and them parking their bus in front of their goal. But I think we know all that already.
For us though, it’s not exactly a chance for us to find our attacking groove because Fergie will look to rest the stars ahead of next week’s clash against Chelsea. But then we also have a Carling Cup fixture in midweek against Derby County. It is quite possible that the manager plays some stars for this and some for midweek — but then again, we can play this guessing game all week. So I can’t really bring an informed analysis ahead of today’s game. I don’t know why I am not too excited by the prospect of today’s game.
While there is a non-committal tone to his words it’s not an admission. It’s quite similar to the Wes Brown situation where the player wanted to stay. I’m sure, if Tevez were to demand £125,000, he wouldn’t be getting it. [Something in the 90k region is as far as I would go -- considering the apparent value Fergie has placed on him; in terms of appearances he's made this season.]
I’m sure asking this question — should Tevez be allowed to leave? — will divide opinion equally among fans. And would love to hear your response. I’d want him as long as we don’t over pay. Even 32 million is steep in my opinion. As a player he’s a wonderful asset to the club, needless to say.
Southampton v Man Utd soccer match PREVIEW :
After Tuesday’s thrilling comeback victory at Blackpool, Manchester United return to FA Cup action and to the road as they face League One promotion hopefuls Southampton on Saturday evening. On Tuesday night at Bloomfield Road, United were down 2-0 with under 20 minutes remaining. But three goals in the late stages, including a brace by Premier League scoring leader Dimitar Berbatov, handed the league leaders a 3-2 win and a five-point lead over Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table.
This weekend, United turn their focus to another trophy pursuit, as they look to secure a place in the last 16 of the FA Cup for the eighth time in nine seasons. Three weeks ago, United opened their FA Cup campaign with a 1-0 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford, and their reward is a tie with former Premier League foe Southampton, who collected a Premier League scalp in the last round with a 2-0 home win over United’s most recent opponents.
These two sides last met in the third round of this same competition two seasons ago, with United notching a 3-0 win at St. Mary’s. In that encounter, goals by Danny Welbeck, Nani (from the spot), and Darron Gibson saw off the then-Championship side, who played with 10 men for nearly an hour. Southampton are trying to work their way back up after some troubled years both on the pitch and financially. After a nearly three-decade stay in the top flight ended in 2005, the Saints were relegated from the Championship in 2009.
A 10-point penalty stemming from their financial issues prevented them from making the League One promotion playoffs last season (they would’ve finished fifth if not for the penalty), but the Saints are on track for at least that this season. Currently, Southampton sit fourth with 41 points from 25 matches, eight points behind leaders Brighton but only two back of Bournemouth for the second automatic promotion spot.
Southampton boast League One’s second-best defensive record, as they’ve allowed only 22 goals all season, and they’ve surrendered only nine in 14 home league matches. In the scoring department, they’re certainly not too shabby at all with 43 (4th in League One), led by Rickie Lambert’s nine.
Young talent has been a big part of Southampton’s resurgence, and one of those young talents, 17-year-old midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, is currently in United’s sights and will be a man to watch this weekend. However, it remains to be seen whether or not another one of their young guns will be in the mix. Playmaker Adam Lallana, who has nine goals and eight assists in all competitions this season, has been out of action recently due to a knee injury, and he may or may not be fit enough to return for Saturday’s clash.
You can expect Fergie to take this tie seriously, so we’ll certainly see some starters from Tuesday night in the starting XI on Saturday. But with a quick turnaround to Tuesday’s Premier League match with Aston Villa at Old Trafford, there will likely be places for some fringe players and bit-part starters. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see a partnership of Michael Owen and Javier Hernandez up front, and we could well keeper Anders Lindegaard make his United debut. Perhaps there could also be a place on the bench for midfielder Danny Drinkwater, who as recalled from a loan spell at Cardiff City this week.
One player who’s certain to not be a part of the action is Rafael, who will be held out after sustaining a concussion in a nasty collision with Marlon Harewood late on at Blackpool. There’s quite a bit of history between Southampton and Manchester United, some of it very, very forgettable for United faithful. To avoid similarly forgettable results this time, United will need to play up to their ability, not down to the level of their opponents, because on talent alone, even a half-strength United should get the job done.
Southampton will likely look to not take too many risks so as to minimize the chances of playing themselves out of the match early. But United should break them down eventually and do enough to book a place in the fifth round.
The below article is for a previous encounter. However, we will also be showing todays match live inside the members area!. Manchester United travel to Southampton in the third round of the FA Cup with the Premier League champions keen to avoid an upset against a side that is struggling to stay afloat in the Championship. United go into the match on the back of some New Year cheer with Cristiano Ronaldo stating that he is happy at the club and is no longer angling for a move away to Real Madrid. The Spanish club's director Pedro Trapote had stated in an interview that a deal was in place for Ronaldo to move to Madrid at the end of the season but the Portuguese winger has rubbished the reports saying that there is no truth in the report.
The Red Devils had drawn Aston Villa in the third round last season and while they secured a comfortable victory over Martin O'Neill's side and beat Arsenal 4-0 in the fifth round, they lost out to eventual winners Portsmouth in the sixth round.Southampton should prove to be easy opponents for United with the Saints not tasting a win in their last eight matches. Southampton are struggling in the Championship with the club placed 23rd in the league table.
The Saints made it to the fifth round in the competition last season, securing comfortable victories against Leicester City and Bury before losing 1-0 away to Bristol City. With survival in the Championship being the primary focus, manager Jan Poortvliet is expected to rest some of his key players ahead of crucial matches against Barnsley and Doncaster Rovers.Watch Southampton vs Manchester United Live online on Live Sport Network, the leading source to watch live FA Cup action anywhere, anytime.
Southampton
The team will be checking the fitness of Dean Hammond right up until the morning of the game. Adam Lallana and David Connolly are also doubts, but new loanee striker Dany N’Guessan with be eligible to play after signing from Leicester City this week.
Possible starting XI: Davis; Richardson, Fonte, Jaidi, Harding; Chamberlain, Chaplow, Schneiderlin, Dickson; Guly, Lambert.
Manchester United
The visitors will be without full-back Rafael after suffering concussion in the team’s game against Blackpool on Tuesday. Edwin van der Sar has been given the weekend off after his retirement announcement, Patrice Evra will also not be featuring due to family bereavement
Rio Ferdinand is a doubt for the game and will probably be safely rested ahead of United’s game next Tuesday against Aston Villa. Meanwhile Michael Carrick will face a late fitness test and Sir Alex Ferguson hopes he will be able to travel to St Mary’s. Meanwhile, Anders Lindegaard could make his first start for the club ahead of Tomasz Kuszczak.
Possible starting XI: Lindegaard; Neville, Smalling, Vidic, Fabio; Park, Fletcher, Anderson, Giggs, Rooney, Hernandez.
History:
It was in the FA Cup that Southampton won their first major trophy all the way back in 1976 in a final with just the goal, scored by Bobby Stokes on the 83rd minute against a lacking Manchester United.
However, the last time these two teams met in the cup was two years ago this month, coming together in the third round and it was not too pretty for Saturday’s home side with United winning 3-0. Goals from Danny Welbeck, Darron Gibson and a penalty from Nani sealed a comprehensive win over The Saints.
But Nigel Adkin’s side will be looking for an upset on Saturday afternoon and will go into the game without the pressure that will be lying on United’s backs after cup failure earlier this season.
Southampton vs Man Utd: Predicted Score, Preferred Team and Match Preview
Manchester United makes the long voyage to St. Mary’s Stadium to tackle Southampton in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup. On top of beating their most-hated rival, Liverpool, in the previous round, United go into this FA Cup match full of confidence following their come-from-behind Barclays Premier League victory over Blackpool, who, coincidentally, was knocked out of this historic competition by Southampton in the Third Round.
This match will mark the third meeting in the last seven years between United and Southampton, which have all been at St. Mary’s, and the Reds will hope that this match will be as easy as the previous two. Both of those away games ended with United advancing to the next round with a thumping 4-0 win in the Sixth Round in March of 2005, a then in January 2009 the Reds eased to a 3-0 victory in the Third Round.
United was completely extended against Blackpool, so with one eye on an all-important Premier League match against Aston Villa coming on Tuesday, Sir Alex Ferguson should be making some major changes to freshen up his squad. Having said that though, the United manager has admitted that this competition has been somewhat of a hex for the Reds since they were forced to withdraw from the competition in the 1999/2000 season, and he wants to lift the cup again before he calls it a day.
According to one of the statisticians on the manutd.com staff, United only have seven FA Cup winners in their current squad, which includes Michael Owen’s triumph with Liverpool in 2001, so there are plenty of Reds that are yearning to win the oldest knockout competition in the world.
United have won the FA Cup a record 11 times, and the Reds would have won another title, if it was not for them falling victim to one of the biggest upsets in the competition’s glorious history. At the old Wembley Stadium in 1976, Southampton defeated United 1-0 to win the club’s only major trophy during their 126 year history.
About Southampton vs Manchester United:
In their three previous FA Cup matches, Southampton have yet to concede a goal beating Shrewsbury Town (2-0), Cheltenham Town (3-0) and Blackpool (2-0). Southampton are currently in fourth spot in League One, the third tier of English football, which means that there are 47 places between them and United in the football league standings.
Nigel Adkins took over the managerial reigns at St. Mary’s after leaving Scunthorpe United prior to the Reds playing them in the Carling Cup in September. Southampton has the second best goal differential (+21) in League One behind the league-leaders, Brighton, who has a +25.
Since being relegated from the Premier League following the 2004/05 season, the Saints have flirted with bankruptcy and facing possible administration, but they may be about to cash in on another one of their young starlets.
WHO :
Following in the footsteps of Gareth Bale and Theo Walcott, young Alex Chamberlain is being linked with a double-digit million pound transfer to one of the big Premier League clubs, which could alleviate some of their financial concerns.
The 17-year old winger is being touted to be moving to either Arsenal, Liverpool or United in a £10 million move. Richard Lambert is the club’s leading goal scorer with nine league goals, but he has not scored in any of Southampton’s three FA Cup games this season. Amazingly, only Kelvin Davis, Oscar Gobern, Lee Holmes and Morgan Schneiderlin remain from the team that lost 3-0 against United two years ago.
News :
It will be interesting to see Sir Alex’s team selection, but Rafael has already been ruled out with a concussion after going to the hospital against Blackpool. Even if he was fit, Rafael would have been part of the face-lift that will probably happen with the United back-four to keep everyone fresh.
The FA Cup should give Michael Owen a run out, but it will be interesting to see who he is partnered with after Javier Hernandez’s game-changing performance against the Seasiders. Wayne Rooney was unable to influence the match, which is why Chicharito was given the chance, so Ferguson will have a dilemma to either try to get the United No. 10 confidence up for the second-half of the season or unleash the young Mexican.
With Edwin van der Sar confirming his retirement plans at the end of the season, this could provide the best chance to give United’s newest signing, Anders Lindegaard, a chance to showcase his talents. The FA Cup has been unkind to Manchester United in recent memory, but hopefully the win against Liverpool will give the Reds a shift in fortune and they will knock Southampton out of the competition to add to their record number of titles.
Southampton face manchester United in the 4th round of the FA Cup on Saturday in game where they have nothing to lose. Yes we can lose the game but everybody expects us to receive a right mauling. Manchester United are sitting proudly on top of the Premiership, and are widely regarded as hot favourites to end up as this seasons champions.Southampton on the other hand are fighting to stay in the race for promotion from league division One to the Championship. United will almost certainly play a team with a few fringe players in it, but one regarded as sufficient to beat their lower graded opponents.
Saints will relish the opportunity to face such exalted opponents as a way to check how they stand in the present scheme of things. United as would be expected have a good record over saints when meeting. Saints have had a few good wins and who can forget the day of the gray shirts. The ground will be packed, and with a full house, the game which will also be televised, could prove to be very entertaining. Though not expecting saints to win I do expect to see the team play above themselves as they try to show how we can play.
